Minimal Water

Waterworks, pumps, service reservoirs, a water tower, valves and districts: you pick a facility, read its state, turn a control and watch the effect. Height is pressure – a district must lie below the water level that supplies it. In the Network view the city opens up and the pipes lie bare; Analysis shows flow, pressure and storage.

Terrain and buildings come from OpenStreetMap and an elevation model; pipe network, sizes and demand are invented: a simplified educational model, not a real control system and not a planning tool. Minimal Water is a playable preview for museums, waterworks and municipal utilities. The game itself is in German and English and runs right in your browser: no download, no app, no sign-up.

  • Desktop

Click a facility, drag a control or turn it with the wheel. Drag moves the map, the right mouse button rotates, the wheel zooms. Keys: WASD pan, Q/E rotate, Space pauses, 1–4 pick the control station, Tab the next facility, ←/→ set the control.

  • Touch

Tap a facility, turn a control. One finger moves the map, two fingers rotate, pinch zooms. On a phone the task sits at the top and the facilities at the bottom to swipe – in your phone’s or tablet’s browser, no app.

3 regions

Witten: set up the supply (“Commissioning”) and isolate a damaged main (“Repair”). Haltern: keep the town supplied while the main pump is down (“Maintenance”). Wuppertal: water from above, enough pressure but not too much (“Pressure zones”). Free exploring too.

How to play

  • Pick a facility, read its state, turn a control – and watch the effect.
  • Height is pressure: water only flows downhill, higher areas need a booster.
  • A pump creates no water – it only delivers what reaches the clear-water tank.
  • Storage balances: the reservoir fills in quiet hours and helps out at the peak.
  • Fast forward runs the day faster; some steps stop the clock until you act.
  • Stuck? “What to do?” helps in stages: What’s wrong? Why? What to do?
  • At the end of a mission supply, reserve and operation count – up to three stars.
