Minimal Roman
The Roman Empire with Rome at its centre: watch Rome grow and replay Cannae.

The Battle of Cannae, 216 BC: the armies drawn up on the ground by the Ofanto
Background
Every statement carries its source: ancient authors such as Polybius, Livy, Frontinus and Tacitus, as well as excavation findings and research literature. Numbers appear as ranges because the ancient figures already disagree. Disputed points are marked as such, for example the exact location of the battlefield or the population of Rome.
Maps and terrain come from open data (OpenStreetMap, elevation models). Rome’s walls and aqueducts follow their known remains. The housing blocks are generated from the estimated population; they do not show the ancient street plan, and the game says so.
The combat model calculates formation, morale, fatigue, flank and rear. Its values are assumptions, not sources; when watched, the result falls within the recorded order of magnitude, and whoever leads Rome may decide differently.
Three places
From the empire map you go to Rome and to the battlefield of Cannae, both on real ground.

Minimal Roman shows the Roman Empire on a relief map with Rome at its centre, from Britain to Egypt. A timeline runs from the founding legend in 753 BC to AD 476: drag it to see the provinces, residences and about a hundred events of the chosen year. The journey plays history by itself.
Rome grows on its real ground: from the hut villages on the Palatine through the Republic to the imperial city of a million and back again. Walls and aqueducts appear in the year they were built, together with the Forum, Circus Maximus, Pantheon, Colosseum and the great baths. Population, water and grain needs are shown alongside, each as a range.
The Battle of Cannae (216 BC) is fought on the real ground by the Ofanto with about 13,000 figures, one figure for ten men. Watch it as Polybius tells it, or lead Rome yourself: tap a unit, then the ground or an enemy. At the end the result stands next to the recorded numbers.
