Minimal Space
Experience the history of spaceflight and build settlements on Mars and the Moon.
-
the Earth as a rotating globe above the Atlantic, launch sites as glowing rings
Background
Earth, Mars and the Moon are based on public-domain NASA data: Blue Marble and Black Marble for the Earth, the Viking colour mosaic and MOLA elevations for Mars, LRO imagery and LOLA elevations for the Moon. There is no connection to any space agency.
The Mars base lies in Arcadia Planitia, where ice is thought to sit just below the surface; its ground is an interpretation of typical forms of the region. Landers, vehicles and figures are our own and simplified. The game marks what is documented, what is simplified and what is a future scenario.
Three worlds
The Earth with its timeline and missions, a base on Mars whose ground recreates typical forms of the region, and one on the Moon built on real elevation data.

Minimal Space…
More +−
Minimal Space starts at the Earth: a globe you can turn, with day and night sides, launch sites and a timeline of spaceflight. On the Apollo 11 card you can fly the 1969 Moon landing yourself, the last 150 metres on scarce fuel to a clear spot. A factual account follows.
On Mars and the Moon you build a settlement out of cubes: habitats, solar fields, ice drills, greenhouse, workshop. It only grows when energy, water, air and food last. Freighters bring supplies from Earth, the station in orbit can be upgraded in three stages, and from the settlement stage on a residential tower for 30 people joins in.
In the free “Sandbox” mode you build without targets, and people move in even without cargo. It all runs right in your browser, no installation.
How to play
More +−
- Tap the ground, choose a building. Tap a building to upgrade or demolish.
- The settlement only grows when energy, water, air and food last.
- Freighters bring supplies from Earth. The “Orbit” button shows the station; upgrading it makes cargo come more often and bring more.
- On Earth: choose missions on the timeline, and on Apollo 11 “Land it yourself”.
